The Chicken Coop Series

How did I come up with these funky chickens? People ask me all the time. So here is the story of Joe.

It was Memorial Day weekend 2009. I had just settled into a comfortable place in life. Hadn't painted in over a year and had never painted just for myself. I always taught and painted more craftsy type art. So this warm Saturday night around 11pm I decided I was going to paint again. I nailed 2 nails into my kitchen wall, hung a 24x36 stretched canvas and began painting. I had an idea of a really cool background, but it turned to mud. The end result was far better than anything I could have ever designed in my mind. Then I painted a big white chicken with huge yellow and orange feet and a big beak to match. I gave him huge bright feathers and a coffee cup in his hand. After all the detail was added Cuppa Joe was named. Now there are over 30 chickens in the series, all named Joe except the chicks and they are just called Chick.
